Homemade Chili Mix

It is cold here  -14.4°C outside my kitchen window. This is the season for chili. We recently started buying ground chicken and turkey so I took this opportunity to try making ground chicken chili with a homemade chili mix instead of buying one, or going without as usual. But my go to is definitely ground beef.

I spend a good part of the winter here making soups, like everyone’s favorite, bacon cheeseburger soup, and chili. Something to warm us up from the inside out.

What you need:

  • Meat: ground chicken, beef, turkey. I’ve also used shredded chicken breasts
  • 1 can kidney beans
  • 1 can of black beans
  • 1 can diced tomatoes or tomato sauce if you don’t care for chunks of tomato in your chili
  • veggies – I add diced bell pepper, shredded carrots, diced onion, diced celery, mushrooms if you like.

How you make Homemade Chili and Chili Mix:

Until I made this recently and my husband was standing in the kitchen with me, he didn’t know I put shredded carrots in it.

I’ve also started adding back beans after opening a can of them by mistake one day and just dumped them in too. It tastes amazing, and makes your meal go farther and fill you faster.

Homemade dry chili mix:

I much prefer to make our mixes like this one myself rather than buy them for a couple reasons. One reason being I don’t have to go buy it, the other reason being, I know what’s in it and can change it to our taste. We like more heat so I’ll add in a little more crushed red pepper flakes.

  • 1/4 c flour
  • 4 tsp chili powder
  • 2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 tbsp dry minced onion
  • 1 tbsp dry minced garlic
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tbsp ground cumin
  • 2 tsp dried parley
  • 2 tsp basil
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper

Mix well.

Throw everything in your large slow cooker on low. Your ground chicken or ground beef, beans, vegetables and tomato sauce, as well as your dry chili mix, give it a good stir and leave it till supper!

We top our chili, and many other meals with crispy onions because they taste so good and add a little crunch to our chili.
