Ice Cream in A Jar

Let’s make ice cream this summer! Have you tried to make ice cream in a jar with your kids before? It is a fun summer treat! All you need is whipping cream and a jar. You might need to go buy the whipping cream, but if you have done any mason jar science activities from here already you already have a jar!

Ice Cream in A Jar

We have made ice cream in a bag before, last summer I think it was. It takes a little more arm work to make ice cream in a bag than this recipe. They are completely different recipes. Making ice cream in a jar is super simple!

What You Need:

  • whipping cream
  • sugar
  • vanilla
  • pinch of salt

How to Make Ice Cream in A Jar

Pour cream, sugar, vanilla, and salt into a 16-ounce mason jar and secure tightly with a lid.

Shake the mason jar until the cream thickens and almost doubles in size, 4 to 5 minutes. It should be opaque and easily coat the back of a wooden spoon.

If you shake it too long, you’ll end up with butter. And that’s not what we are going for.

Freeze for 3 hours, or until hardened. Scoop out ice cream with a spoon and serve with your favorite ice cream toppings.

We added some chocolate sauce. And yes, we ate straight out of the jar.

This is not a recipe you want to eat all at once. It is rich and heavy. This was a eat a little at a time treat.
