We moved into a smaller home. Everything is a mess. I clean one room, turn around and the other room is a mess again. Time for a major overhaul of our home and how things are done. I want to share my mom hacks for keeping a clean home that have been lifesavers for my sanity.

Declutter to Keep A Clean Home
This is the biggest step for us. Moving from a large house and then a smaller one means that we have to downsize more and declutter our spaces. I find our clutter has gotten more out of control since we started homeschooling.
I am cutting down on what we keep, and sticking to what we are using instead of hoard things we don’t use. Yes hoarding school supplies can be … bad.
Use Baskets
Baskets are everywhere in my house. They are great way to catch clutter in each room.
- a basket for each child’s laundry – I wash and dry, I do not fold or put away their laundry
- galvanized metal buckets around the top of our kitchen cupboards to store extras we have – baskets would work great too, but these worked with our decor
Give Everything A Home
When everything has a home, then it doesn’t make clutter. It will be easier to put things away when they are out of place this way as well when everyone is tidying up and you don’t have to tell them where everything goes.
Make Your Kids Help
It is never too early to have your kids do chores and help out around the house. Starting with their own toys. This is where we started with our kids.
Kids can help out with unloading the dishwasher, or vacuuming the floor.
Take Control of the Laundry
Do one load of laundry everyday! Seriously, this is the best thing I have done in our home. No more weekend mountain of laundry, no more running out of clean towels.
Keep Your Kitchen Counters Clear
I don’t function well in our kitchen if my counter tops are cluttered and messy. If I am going to make supper or do some baking I have to clean up first. Therefore it just makes more sense to keep the clutter to a minimum.
The kitchen always looks amazing if the counters are clear.
Clean the Bathroom before Showering
I give my bathroom sink, shower/tub, and toilet a quick cleaning before hopping in the shower a couple times a week. One bathroom, five people, this makes a huge difference and then I don’t have to do a big gross cleaning in there.
Have the Right Tools for Keeping A Clean Home
This is the biggest one! If you don’t have the right tools you aren’t going to get the job done. Have cleaning tools that are easy to access and easy to use. I got rid of my big bulky vacuum and got an upright lightweight vacuum. I also have a robotic floor cleaner, with so many pets there is a lot of fur floating around my floors and this has been a lifesaver.
