This is something that I have been wanting to do with my kids forever! I have never done it or seen it done so it was fun and exciting for both the kids and me.

We are already planning to do it again… next time I am buying a six-pack of pop. Hubby wants to see it too and was really surprised how high it actually shot up.

I was sad that I didn’t get better photos this first time around, but I was concentrating on what was actually happening and my girls’ reaction than where I was aiming the camera. Next time we’ll definitely use the tripod.

What you need:

How to make Pop and Mentos Eruption:

It’s really simple. All you need is a bottle of pop and a mento.

Pop & Mento Eruption

Brookland got the joy of dropping the mento in. I told them that there would an explosion but I guess I didn’t go into details because…

Pop & Mento Eruption

My girl jumped back quite far. She wasn’t expecting it at all.

Pop & Mento Eruption

I had no idea that it would shoot up that far. Austin wanted to go to the store right away to get more pop. I wanted to go to the store to get more pop, but couldn’t justify the 30-minute drive, each way.

But we’ll be getting more this weekend and I’ll take some more (and better) pictures!

Have you ever done this? Are you now planning to do this?

Prep Time: 2 minutes
Active Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 2 minutes
Difficulty: Easy

Make a pop volcano.

Materials

  • 2L bottle of diet coke
  • mentos

Tools

  • No tools required.

Instructions

  1. Open the bottle of pop.
  2. Drop a mento into the bottle of pop and step back. There is nothing else you need to do.

Update: We did this again… three more times. But we did it with 710 mL bottles of coke, and it failed. Well, it didn’t fail, it worked but it didn’t go as high as it did with the 2L. And since we still have Mentos left over, I’ll be buying another 2L bottle, or two. I loved watching the kids’ reaction so much that, yes I will waste more money on this.
