Building a family isn’t solely reliant on a woman’s fertility health, but also massively relies on a man’s fertility health, too. It is clear that this has become a wider topic of discussion in recent years. Although a man’s fertility can only be confirmed through a semen analysis, there are also other tell-tale signs that a man is likely fertile.
Here, we’ll discuss what to look out for in a man’s fertility health. Again, as we mentioned before, it is important to consult with a doctor, too, as this would be the most accurate way of being able to tell whether or not a man is fertile. This way, you can begin to plan properly when growing your family.
1. A healthy libido and sexual function
A positive sign to look out for is a healthy and consistent sex drive. When a man has a strong libido, this generally means that they have balanced hormone levels, including testosterone. As you may know, this is essential for sperm production, and beyond this, the ability to achieve and maintain an erection, as well as ejaculate, is also a direct indicator that there is proper neurological, vascular and hormonal function.
2. Ejaculate volume and appearance
Another sign to look out for is the volume and appearance of a man’s sperm. For example, the volume of semen should be at least 1.5 to 2 mm – this equates to approximately ½ teaspoon.
On the other hand, a lower volume of semen could suggest that there is an issue with the seminal vesicles or prostate. Also, the fluid should be a milky white to grayish-white colour. A clear or yellowish colour could indicate a problem, though this isn’t always the case.
3. Overall physical health
Male fertility does not only refer to sex drive and sperm volume, however. There are other aspects, such as the overall physical health of a man, that also contribute towards healthy male fertility. Good physical health also typically means that a man’s fertility is in good shape, which would include having a healthy BMI. Being both underweight and overweight will negatively impact the quality of the sperm.
So, having a balanced diet and exercising regularly, alongside avoiding unhealthy habits like excessive drinking and smoking, is key.
4. The absence of chronic medical conditions
Another aspect to consider is certain medical conditions that can directly impact fertility. Men who are free from chronic diseases like diabetes, uncontrolled hypertension, or mumps after puberty are more likely to have a healthy sperm count and motility.
Similarly, having a history of any sexually transmitted infections (STIs) should also be taken into consideration. Some STIs can result in scarring of the reproductive tract or blockages.
5. Regular and consistent ejaculation
The male reproductive system is designed to be used consistently, and regular ejaculation helps clear out the ‘pipes’, per se. This helps to ensure that the sperm that is present is fresh and of good quality
Important note:
Remember, these are purely general indicators, and a man can have all of these indicators and still have an issue with fertility. This is why, as we mentioned in the beginning, you should consult with a doctor if you feel there is an issue with your own or your partner’s fertility.
The only way to truly confirm male fertility is through a semen analysis performed at a fertility clinic or an andrology lab. This test provides a detailed look at sperm count, motility, and morphology, giving a clear picture of a man’s reproductive health.
If you and your partner have been trying to conceive for a year (or six months if the female partner is over 35), it’s a good idea for both of you to get a full fertility check-up. Understanding your own reproductive health is the first step toward a successful journey to parenthood.
