Sweet Donair Sauce Recipe

This is another amazingly easy, delicious condiment that screams East Coast of Canada. This is a sweet donair sauce recipe that we make occasionally. This one uses evaporated milk instead of sweetened condensed milk.

Sometimes I forget what kind of milk we need, and I buy the wrong kind. Donair sauce is the only recipe we make regularly that calls for sweetened condensed milk, yet, I was always buying evaporate milk instead. Blake came up with this recipe for when I do this.

I’m not sure which one I like best, while our other recipe is more like Pizza Delight, this one is more like Greco. It is so hard to choose between the two of them.

Sweet donair sauce

Donair Sauce Ingredients Needed

  • 1 can evaporated milk
  • 3/4 cup of sugar
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 7 tbsp vinegar, OR as much needed, see notes

How to Make Sweet Donair Sauce

Mix the first three ingredients together in a container.

Slowly add vinegar. Adding a tablespoon at a time.

Notes: Adding too much of the vinegar will cause you to have runny donair sauce. The consistency of your evaporated milk will affect how much vinegar you need.

This makes a thick donair sauce recipe.

If you often find that your sauce is too runny you may have added too much vinegar. Just like baked goods, temperature and climate can affect how much of certain ingredients. It can also be affected by the brand of evaporated milk that you use.

Sweet Donair Sauce - Vinegar

I typically buy the brand name, while Blake bought the store brand in the video and you can see that it is slightly runnier.

You may find you don’t need the full 7 tablespoons of vinegar. Add it in slowly and test as you go along. It’s easier to add more than to take it away later on. We add a few at the very beginning and mix them well. Go from there. You may not need to add any more!

Another amazing donair sauce recipe. This one uses evaporated milk instead.

Ingredients

  • 1 can evaporated milk
  • 3/4 cup of sugar
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 7 tbsp vinegar, OR as much needed see notes

Instructions

  1. Mix the first three ingredients together in a container.
  2. SLOWLY add vinegar. Adding a tablespoon at a time.

Notes

Adding too much of the vinegar will cause you to have runny donair sauce. The consistency of your evaporated milk will effect how much vinegar you need.

The Difference Between Evaporated and Condensed Milk

The major difference that sets these two canned milk products apart is sugar content; sweetened condensed milk, as the name implies, is always sweetened, while evaporated milk is unsweetened.

What is Donair Sauce for?

Garlic fingers! Garlic fingers are made on pizza dough. The dough is covered in garlic butter. Cover with shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan cheese. Baked and then cut into “fingers” instead of slices.

Dip your garlic fingers in the donair sauce or spread a little on each of your garlic fingers.

Donairs

This is a little harder to explain simply. I tried for almost eight years while out west. It is a seasoning of ground beef that is baked, slowly. Pieces are shaved off. This is the donair meat.

Using a pita round you cover the pita with some donair sauce, top with some donair meat, and then a drop of donair sauce. Some, myself included, like to have fresh diced tomato and onions on it as well. Fold the pita over for a delicious donair.

Yum! Instead of pizza sauce, use donair sauce. Instead of pizza toppings, donair meat (some places add a little pepperoni too). Cover with shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan cheese. Bake.
