Hobby Ideas for Homeschool Moms

Every Christmas Blake, my husband, states that I have no hobbies. What he really means is that has no hobbies that he wants to shop for. I do have some hobbies, and there are so many more that I could pick u if only I had the time and money, and skill. I thought up 15 different hobby ideas for homeschool moms. Our kids aren’t the only ones who need to keep their minds focused and sharp.

We spend so much time as moms, working to care for others that we can completely miss the signs that we need an outlet. Look for simple signs that you need to spend some time recharging. You might be exhausted, you may feel disconnected from yourself and others, or maybe you are experiencing frustrations and short-fused moments lately.

Find something that is just for you, that makes you happy, don’t worry about what others think. I currently have more yarn than I need because my creative outlet is crocheting. I love watching something come together, bonus I get to make stuff for myself and others, like the “Spider-Man” blanket I made Gauge one year, or the super cute amigurumi Marvel characters.

Hobbies Ideas for Homeschool Moms

There are so many hobbies that homeschool moms could and can start for themselves. The most important thing is to choose something you’ll actually love, regardless of what you believe others will think of it!

Crochet and/or Knitting

I taught myself to crochet by finding beginner patterns, free ones of course, on Pinterest and then using YouTube to learn how to do each stitch. Bonus if you can find a pattern that also has a video to walk you through the steps.

Painting or Drawing

Have you thought about drawing or painting before? Or maybe it is something you used to do all the time. Now might be the time to pick it back up. Start slow, and small so you don’t overwhelm yourself.

Writing

Start writing poems, stories, a book, or even a blog. Who knows you might have a bestseller in your mind right now.

Scrapbooking or Cardmaking

Scrapbooking is a great way to preserve memories.

Photography

I love taking pictures of our kids and scenery if it’s really nice. You do not have to have a fancy camera to take a great photo. Cell phone cameras are really amazing now, I took this photo with my cellphone, no filters.

Gardening

I have a love/hate relationship with gardening. I love doing the prep work, and planting everything, the hate comes in when things do not grow, I’m sure you understand if you have ever had a garden. You could also have growing herbs in your house too throughout the year. Gardening can be a great hobby idea for moms.

Jewelry Making

There are some beautiful homemade jewelry. That could be something that you might enjoy making.

Reading

I read books by the bag full. I specifically read romance because reading to me is going off to another place and leaving all troubles behind. I occasionally pick up homeschool or related books.

Join a book club, either in person or virtually. I know our local library has book clubs, though due to COVID they are currently online only.

I have a calligraphy kit sitting in my cupboard because I would love to learn how to write that beautifully. Now to find the time and concentrate that hard.

Sewing or quilting

I enjoy making cute things for my kids’ dolls. The 18inch dolls who clothes cost as much to buy as a new outfit for my children. Now every once in a while I spend an hour making clothes for their dolls from old clothes of theirs or from fabric I get at Walmart.

Cross Stitch

Have you tried to cross stitch? I find it very relaxing. It’s something I can do as I watch TV.

Graphic Design or Web Design

This might be something that requires a little more time, but it is definitely something you can learn from home on your own. And then put to use as you wish.
