I make all the bread that our family consumes, at least 3 seasons of the year, and it is definitely saving us money, and in the winter the heat from the oven adds an extra bit of heat to our home. This sandwich bread is our favorite recipe for bread that doesn’t require a bread machine. There is just something about homemade bread coming out of the oven.

Easiest Homemade Sandwich Bread

I had another bread recipe that I used up until now, and it was great, but I was trying to find a way to cut back on the grocery bill, and that recipe used a lot of ingredients.

The recipe that I am using now only has four ingredients which fits our budget so much better and makes it easier to make in the long run.

What you need:

  • 1/4 c canola oil
  • 1 tsp white sugar
  • 1 1/2 tbsp yeast
  • 2 3/4 cup water
  • 6 1/2 cup flour
  • 1 tsp salt

How to make easy sandwich bread:

Yeast, warm water, and sugar. Make sure your water is warm, not too hot or you’ll kill the yeast, too cold and it won’t react. I only use a cup of water at this point, and then let it sit for about 5 minutes until the yeast is all foamy.

Toss in the remaining water, oil, and three cups of flour, oh, and toss in some salt as well. Mix, cover, and let it sit for about 10 minutes. It will get a bit bubbly.

Add in the remaining flour and mix it well. I use my mixer with a dough hook and mix until the dough becomes a ball of dough around the hook.

Remove from the bowl and place into another, but greased bowl. Cover, I cover it with a piece of parchment paper and a dish towel, that way the dough doesn’t stick to the towel as it rises.

Let it rise in a warm spot for an hour, then divide it into your loaf pans.

If you want to make two large loaves of this sandwich bread, divide it into two, I divide it into 3 medium-sized loaves. Let it rise for another hour, and then bake at 350˚ for 30 minutes.

Ingredient Alternatives for Easy Sandwich Bread

  1. Flour Variations
Classic all-purpose flour creates a soft, tender crumb, but bread flour will yield a chewier, bakery-style texture. For a heartier, more wholesome loaf, substitute up to 50 percent of the flour with whole wheat flour or white whole wheat flour. For gluten-free households, use a certified gluten-free 1:1 baking blend designed for yeast breads.

  2. Sugar Substitutes
White sugar helps activate the yeast and adds a touch of sweetness, but it can easily be swapped with honey, maple syrup, or coconut sugar. Just reduce the liquid slightly if using a liquid sweetener.

  3. Milk Options
Use warm water or dairy milk for the base liquid, but almond milk, oat milk, or soy milk work just as well for a dairy-free loaf. Avoid using cold liquids, as they can slow the yeast’s activity.

  4. Butter Replacements
If you’re avoiding dairy, substitute butter with melted coconut oil, avocado oil, or vegan margarine. These options still deliver a soft and flavorful crumb.

  5. Yeast Choices
This recipe works with active dry yeast or instant yeast. If using active dry yeast, proof it in warm water with a bit of sugar for 5–10 minutes before adding to the flour.

Optional Add-Ins to Enhance Flavor and Texture

While the base recipe is soft, simple, and perfect for sandwiches, you can easily customize your loaf with delicious mix-ins:

  • Add rolled oats, flaxseed, or chia seeds for texture and added nutrition
  • Fold in shredded cheese or fresh herbs like rosemary or thyme for a savory twist
  • Sprinkle sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or everything bagel seasoning on top before baking
  • Sweeten it slightly with cinnamon and raisins for a breakfast-friendly variation
  • Add minced garlic or chopped sun-dried tomatoes for a more gourmet flavor profile

These enhancements not only elevate the taste but allow you to rank for related searches like ā€œwhole wheat sandwich bread with seedsā€ or ā€œsavory herb bread recipe.ā€

Mom-Tested Tips for the Best Homemade Bread

  • Let your dough rise in a warm, draft-free area. I often place it in the oven with the light on for a cozy proofing spot
  • Don’t over-knead; about 8 to 10 minutes by hand or 5 minutes in a stand mixer is perfect
  • Use a digital thermometer to test doneness—bread is fully baked at 190°F to 200°F
  • Allow the loaf to cool completely before slicing to avoid a gummy texture
  • This bread freezes beautifully. Slice the loaf, store in a zip-top freezer bag, and pull out a few slices as needed for toast or sandwiches

A Mother’s Final Thought on Baking from Scratch

There’s a quiet pride in baking your own sandwich bread at home. You control every ingredient, avoid unnecessary preservatives, and most importantly, give your family something warm and comforting that was made with love. This easy bread recipe is one I turn to again and again, whether I’m packing school lunches or making buttery toast on a rainy morning.

If you’re new to bread baking, this is a perfect place to start. And if you’re already a pro, I hope you’ll enjoy experimenting with the add-ins and variations that make this recipe uniquely yours. Let this simple loaf remind you that sometimes, the best things really do come from your own kitchen.
