Exploring Our Solar System and Planets

I remember enjoying learning about the solar system in elementary school. Mine, Pluto was still a planet back then, so some things have changed over the past …. a larger number of years than I would like to admit.

For us, my kids started to explore the solar system with our first telescope. Which then lead to us getting some books to understand what we were looking at.

Books for Exploring The Stars:

50 Things To See With A Telescope – Kids: A Constellation Focused Approach – This colorful edition explores the constellations with young readers, guiding them to dozens of galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters. Every page features a helpful “telescope view”, showing exactly how objects appear through a small telescope or binoculars.

Astronomy for Kids: How to Explore Outer Space with Binoculars, a Telescope, or Just Your Eyes! – With this book as their guide to the northern hemisphere, kids will learn to find and name amazing objects in the night sky. From the Milky Way Galaxy to Mars to the Moon’s craters and mountains―Astronomy for Kids helps young astronomers discover important parts of our solar system.

100 Things to See in the Night Sky – Keep your feet on the ground and experience the night sky to the fullest by exploring planets, satellites, and constellations with this all-inclusive reference guide to space. Using Printables to Keep Learning

I created a set of printables to use in your homeschool, or public school, class while about the solar system and planets. Use these to keep track of what you and your students are learning about each of the eight planets, plus the milky way, and the asteroid belt.

Streaming Educational Videos/Documentaries

Amazon Prime also has some great options. Search “planets” to find them.

Check out documentaries on Curiousity Stream. We searched “solar system” and ‘planets” to find some great options.
